How to Become a Hospitality Professional: A Step-by-Step Guide

The world’s tourism and hospitality industry keeps growing, and with it, the demand for skilled professionals. New hotels, resorts and restaurants are looking for people who can work to international standards, lead teams and create memorable guest experiences.

Whether you dream of running a professional kitchen as a chef or leading a hotel’s restaurants and bars as an F&B Director, this guide explains the steps to building a hospitality career, from your first interest to a professional career.

Step 1: Discover Where Your Passion Lies

Hospitality is built on human connection, leadership and service excellence, skills that technology cannot replace. But within hospitality, there are different paths. Ask yourself:

Do you love food and creating dishes?
A career in the kitchen, with the goal of becoming a chef, may be right for you.

Do you enjoy working with people, organizing and leading?
A career in food and beverage service and management, with the goal of becoming an F&B Manager or F&B Director, may suit you best.

Both paths require teamwork, discipline and attention to detail, and both offer exciting opportunities in Cambodia and around the world.

Step 2: Build Your English Skills

English is the working language of the international hospitality industry. Communicating with international guests, colleagues and managers often happens in English, especially in hotels and resorts.

At PIE, all diploma programs are taught in English. Students who need to strengthen their language skills first can join the English Preparatory program, which focuses on hospitality communication, guest interaction and professional vocabulary.

Step 3: Choose Your Professional Training

Some people learn on the job, but formal training gives you a much stronger foundation and a faster path to responsibility. PIE offers two diploma programs, accredited by SHL Schweizerische Hotelfachschule Luzern, one of Switzerland’s leading hospitality schools, so students train to Swiss standards right here in Phnom Penh.

Culinary Arts: For Future Chefs

  • Service excellence and guest experience

  • Sales, operations and financial management
  • Team leadership and real-world industry exposure

Applicants can join directly after high school or as career changers looking to build professional skills.

Step 4: Gain Real Experience Through Internships

Nothing replaces real-world experience. Internships allow you to apply what you learned in class in a working hotel or restaurant, learning speed, teamwork and consistency from experienced professionals.

At PIE, internships are a central part of the learning journey. Our students have completed placements at leading properties in Cambodia and abroad, including luxury hotels in Japan, France, Hong Kong, the UAE, Vietnam or Malaysia.

Step 5: Start Your Career and Grow

The best hospitality professionals keep learning throughout their careers. Trends change, guest expectations evolve, and every workplace offers something new. Workshops, competitions, travel and mentorship all help you keep growing.
